a few things worth knowing · sunday, october 25, 2026

Windows XP is old enough to have opinions about the next generation of computers. One of Saturn’s moons has been keeping two very different faces for considerably longer. Welcome to a few things worth knowing: a daily handful of curious facts, starting with what actually happened on this date, then wandering off somewhere useful.

    today in history: october 25

    1. windows xp turns 25, and regis was there

Microsoft made Windows XP available worldwide on October 25, 2001. The New York launch included Bill Gates, an appearance by Regis Philbin, and a Microsoft-sponsored Sting concert in Bryant Park. An operating-system launch with a daytime-TV personality and a pop star feels like an artifact from a different civilization. It was also only 25 years ago, which is rude.

The letters stood for “Experience,” according to the Computer History Museum. XP also brought Microsoft’s NT architecture to its consumer Windows line. Behind the friendly name was a substantial change to the machinery. Microsoft’s launch announcement · Computer History Museum.

    2. saturn’s two-tone moon has a 355-year discovery anniversary

Giovanni Cassini discovered Iapetus on October 25, 1671. The moon’s leading hemisphere is strikingly dark, while much of its trailing hemisphere is bright. In the Cassini spacecraft views at the top of this post, those are two sides of the same moon, not a before-and-after cleaning demonstration.

The contrast is so strong that NASA compares the dark terrain to charcoal and the bright terrain to snow. Iapetus supplies an unusually literal answer to “have you tried looking at it from the other side?” NASA’s Iapetus overview · The two-hemisphere image explained.

    three more for the collection

These next three are bonus facts, not October 25 anniversaries. The calendar has done its part.

    3. an early tennis game let you change planets

The original Tennis for Two equipment at Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1958.

Tennis for Two debuted at Brookhaven National Laboratory on October 18, 1958, using an analog computer and a five-inch oscilloscope screen. The photograph shows that original setup. The 1959 upgrade added a larger display and a delightful option: tennis with the Moon’s low gravity or Jupiter’s high gravity.

Before home consoles became ordinary furniture, somebody had already decided Earth tennis needed additional settings. Calling it the unquestioned “first video game” would start an argument; Brookhaven itself explains why that title is complicated. Planetary tennis is plenty impressive without it. Brookhaven’s history of Tennis for Two.

    4. alabama’s famous meteorite took the indoor route

The dark Hodges meteorite on display at the Alabama Museum of Natural History.

On November 30, 1954, a meteorite came through the roof of a house near Sylacauga, bounced off a console radio, and struck Ann Hodges while she was napping on a couch. The Alabama Museum of Natural History preserves both the meteorite and the radio.

That second object is a particularly good museum detail: a piece of ordinary living-room furniture that became part of an astronomical event. The rock did not merely arrive in Alabama. It made a connection. The museum’s account · Its exhibits.

    5. the first pride flags had eight stripes

The original rainbow flags flown in San Francisco in 1978 had eight colors, including pink and turquoise. Gilbert Baker helped create them with Lynn Segerblom, James McNamara, and volunteers. The familiar symbol has a collaborative history, right down to the making.

There is also a useful connection between the flag and the rest of queer culture: Baker had learned to sew to make his own drag costumes. A practical skill acquired for one kind of self-expression helped produce another. Smithsonian’s history of the rainbow flag · SFO Museum on Baker’s life and work.

A reality-show vault, a very bad week aboard a spaceship, and a Windows button that might actually be useful. Sunday’s afternoon dispatch:

vault-tec would like you to form an alliance

Fallout Shelter: The Experiment has a premiere date: January 13, 2027, on Prime Video. Bethesda’s Fallout Day roundup confirms the competition series will put contestants through escalating challenges for a cash prize, with Amazon, Kilter Films and Studio Lambert behind it. This is the unscripted spinoff, not the next season of the drama. The vault has finally found a use for its confession booth.

Wrong Organ’s psychological horror follows five crew members stranded aboard the freighter Tulpar, with supplies running out and nobody having a particularly healthy time. The news here is the Xbox release, not a new sequel—and a doomed workplace is a fairly efficient Halloween setting.

windows has found a button for the missing phone

Windows Quick Settings shows Do Not Disturb, Vibrate and Play sound controls for a connected Android phone.

Microsoft’s October 23 Experimental Insider preview is gradually adding phone controls to Quick Settings: supported Android devices can be rung, switched to Do Not Disturb, or have their ringer mode changed from the PC. It is also testing internet-speed results inside Quick Settings rather than sending you off to a browser. iPhone support starts with a more limited status-focused experience, and none of this is a promise of general availability yet. Still: finding the phone under the couch is a respectable use of a computer.

the age gate needs a paper trail

EFF is asking people to document account losses, failed age checks and other access problems after the Eleventh Circuit reversed or vacated preliminary injunctions blocking Florida and Georgia’s social-media restrictions. Florida’s covered platforms must exclude under-14s and require parental consent for 14- and 15-year-olds; Georgia requires parental consent for under-16s on covered platforms. The litigation is not over, and EFF’s practical request is to save dates, screenshots and the platform’s explanation—not hand over extra sensitive information just to prove there was a problem. An age-check pop-up is considerably less trivial when your whole community is behind it.

Bravo is shrinking the drama, EastEnders is getting an archive channel, and one platformer has made the entire planet take a number. Also: a haunted attraction with staffing issues and two useful mouse fixes.

bravo has made the drama pocket-sized

Bravo’s October 23 announcement includes its first scripted microdrama, Charmed by a Southern Monster, with Craig Conover and Nicole Mattox leading a romance involving a family estate and a rumored murderer. It premieres November 9 exclusively in the Peacock mobile app; the same announcement orders Next Gen Atlanta and renews Next Gen NYC, Southern Hospitality and In the City. The television is apparently too large for this particular property dispute.

jono has invented the global queue

Jono, Part Time Monkey’s free Windows platformer released earlier this month, gives the entire world one character and each player a one-minute turn. Everyone else watches and chats while waiting, and cleared rooms count toward a shared million-room journey. In this week’s developer interview, Tuomas Erikoinen explains how that queue became the game’s social center. UKTV announced eight new free, ad-supported channels on October 21, including EastEnders on U, with a rollout on LG Channels and Freely before the end of the year. The EastEnders selection goes back to the mid-2000s; Casualty and Holby City also get dedicated channels. This is a UK announcement, not a new U.S. streaming option, and no exact launch day is given. The first lets a brief hold keep a mouse button engaged for dragging or selecting until another click; the second hides the pointer while typing or after inactivity, then restores it when moved. There is also a quick-access shelf for pinned Command Palette actions. Sometimes the useful update is simply fewer things to keep holding down.

Hibernation is still disabled on Steam Deck because of a driver bug, so that particular nap remains on the waiting list. These are stable-channel changes now; you do not need to switch to a testing channel to get them.

Her life’s work was recognized with many awards and honors, including the 2016 Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama, whose citation noted: “Hamilton defined new forms of software engineering and helped launch an industry that would forever change human history. Her software architecture led to giant leaps for humankind, writing the code that helped America set foot on the moon.”

“To say Margaret Hamilton was a pioneer — to say she was ahead of her time — would be a dramatic understatement. She was a software engineer at a time when that field was in its infancy, and she not only developed advanced code herself but also led a team in using that nascent technology to develop one of the most complex systems humanity had ever achieved,” says Olivier de Weck, the Apollo Program Professor and interim head of the MIT Department Aeronautics and Astronautics.

the duolingo owl has a personality. your bank’s purple people do not.

flat shapes are not the crime. asking the same cheerful purple person to represent a language lesson, a mortgage, and a layoff… Read more

I asked whether the Duolingo characters count as Corporate Memphis, and then immediately wondered whether they would get a makeover now that the look feels a little passé. this is what happens when your brain turns a language app into an unsolicited design meeting.

do the Duolingo characters count as Corporate Memphis designs?

    — schweg, 🦇 (@schwegler.lol) 2026-10-04T02:22:42.912Z

you know the look. friendly people assembled from shapes, improbable limbs, colors selected by a committee that has heard of diversity but would prefer not to discuss anybody’s actual life. a cheerful person reaches toward a floating rectangle. the rectangle may be a mortgage application, a productivity dashboard, or your termination paperwork. the person is thrilled.

Duolingo clearly lives in the same visual neighborhood. but I think the distinction matters: the owl has a personality. the people on your bank’s landing page usually have a responsibility to avoid having one.

a circle is not a moral failure

“Corporate Memphis” is useful shorthand for an overfamiliar corporate illustration aesthetic. it becomes less useful when it means every flat cartoon with rounded edges. that definition would allow us to arrest half of children’s television. occasionally a shape is just a shape, even when it has accepted venture capital.

Duolingo’s explanation of its shape language describes a deliberate system built around simplifying forms and exaggerating important details. its character-design history ties the human cast to Duo’s visual world. these are choices made to build something recognizable, not evidence that a circle has committed fraud.

Duolingo’s illustration guide breaks a cat into geometric shapes
A cat reduced to geometric forms: the technique itself is not the problem. Artwork: Duolingo, reproduced for design criticism.

my test is embarrassingly simple. remove the logo. can I still tell whose people these are? better yet, can I tell which person is which without looking at their shirt? Duolingo clears that bar. Lily looks like she would rather be somewhere else. a corporate illustration person usually looks like they have never been allowed to consider somewhere else.

the difference is not whether the design is commercial. of course it is commercial. the bird has a job. the difference is whether the design permits a character to feel anything that might complicate the sales pitch.

personality requires the possibility of being annoying

a mascot you can dislike is doing more character work than a silhouette you cannot remember. Duo can be overbearing. the app’s whole motivational presence can feel like a tiny supervisor who lives in your phone. that irritation is still a relationship. you recognize the source of it. you can make a joke about it that would not work with every other logo substituted in.

meanwhile, the generic corporate person floats through a world without friction. no unflattering posture. no boredom. no suspicion about the floating rectangle. everybody has apparently read the privacy policy and found it spiritually nourishing.

Facet projects a Liz Lemon-inspired persona, rests their face on one hand in frustration, and says “BLERG!” Reaction: frustration.
Vikram’s older and redesigned Duolingo character models side by side
A redesign can address a specific character rather than replace the entire world. Artwork: Duolingo’s Vikram redesign, reproduced for design criticism.

Duolingo has already reworked Vikram, describing consultation about representation alongside changes to his shapes. that is a much more interesting reason to adjust a character than “the internet has decided rounded people are cringe.” it asks what this particular design communicates and to whom.

please do not give the owl a tasteful beige era

my worry is that recognizing a trend’s exhaustion becomes an instruction to erase everything built with its tools. a company decides flat illustration is out and trades the familiar cast for glossy gradients, vaguely handmade scribbles, or whatever the next mood board calls human. six months later, every landing page has the new version of the same problem.

I have a standing interest in websites being allowed to have a personality. the same permission should extend to their little inhabitants. consistency does not have to mean interchangeability. polish does not have to mean removing every visible opinion.

keep the shapes if they serve the characters. change the shapes if they stop serving them. but do not make the owl less weird because your bank hired a purple woman to hold an enormous credit card.

    she is not his fault.
