the geese have made actual plans. there is a calendar and everything.

silly goose girls night is a project built around crafts, food, friendship, and making room for a little more play. their feed moves between projects you can try at home and real-life gatherings in montgomery, alabama. the name sets a fairly manageable dress code for your personality.

their mission statement puts the emphasis on creativity, laughter, and an inclusive community, with women giving themselves permission to play. not every hobby needs to become a small business. sometimes scissors can just be scissors.

first, the dates that have not already happened

if you’re around montgomery, there are two things on their published calendar:

    • saturday, october 31, 2026, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.: find their table at the hilltop halloween market at hilltop public house, 3 north goldthwaite street. their latest announcement says they’re making things for the market and will have candy for the kids. stop by and meet the geese.
    • saturday, november 14, 2026, 10 a.m.–noon: make & mingle at hilltop public house. the calendar announcement describes a laid-back social: everyone is welcome, and you can bring a craft or project you’re working on and meet some new people. your unfinished project has been invited out.
Silly Goose Girls Night calendar: October 8 pop-up at Lorraine's, October 31 Hilltop Halloween Market, and November 14 Make & Mingle at Hilltop Public House.
the organizers’ calendar, which also includes the now-past october 8 pop-up. graphic: silly goose girls night.

those details are from their public announcements, checked october 22. follow the account for updates before heading out; the november listing doesn’t specify a ticket price or registration requirement.

they have already put the scissors on the table

their first official event was the october 8 modgepodge collage night at lorraine’s bake shop. the event listing supplied the practical part: collage supplies, a canvas, and time to make something together. their next-day recap shows people working around the craft tables and thanks lorraine and bill for hosting.

this is the useful thing about the photos: you can see the activity rather than being asked to imagine an abstract concept called community. paper, scissors, glue, other people. an unusually literal way to make connections.

photos and original recap: silly goose girls night. the october 8 event has already happened; this is a look at what they’ve been making, not a current ticket offer.

the stickers can finally stop waiting for the perfect surface

one of their at-home projects takes a familiar problem—stickers too good to commit to anything—and turns it into a miniature gallery wall. their july 19 carousel walks through framing favorite stickers, including travel souvenirs, in little frames.

a small project, an excuse to sit together, and something to put on the wall afterward. the sticker collection has received a promotion.

    and yes, there is pie

the food side is similarly approachable. their cream cheese icebox pie reel uses a graham-cracker crust and a blended filling, then lets the refrigerator do its part. the full method is in their original post below. leave time for chilling; the pie does have one scheduling requirement.

between the craft projects, recipes, and local gatherings, there are several ways into this particular flock. try something from the feed, send a project to the friend you’d make it with, or put one of the montgomery dates on the calendar.

start with @silly_goose_girls_night on instagram. their official link page also connects to facebook and tiktok. at the time of writing, its eventbrite button still points to the october 8 event, so the instagram announcements above are the useful place for the next dates.

the Pink Panther has an excellent career story: hired to help introduce a movie, became famous enough to leave the movie and spend his time making other people’s houses the wrong color.

in the original The Pink Panther, the precious object everybody is pursuing is a jewel. Peter Sellers plays Inspector Clouseau. the tall pink cat is over in the animated credits, apparently working on a much more sustainable business model.

there is something very satisfying about a spin-off that can discard practically the entire plot of the thing it came from. no homework. no explanation of who somebody’s father was. the cat has taken what he needs and left.

    the introduction develops ambitions

Blake Edwards asked DePatie–Freleng to create the character for the film. in David DePatie’s account of the process, Edwards selected Hawley Pratt’s design from more than a hundred drawings. the request for an animated title sequence came later. the character was already interesting before anyone had worked out what he should do for several minutes.

his first assignment was excellent: interfere with the credits. a list of people who made a movie becomes somewhere a small nuisance can live. Henry Mancini supplies the music; the cat supplies the suspicion that he considers the whole production his property.

the AFI catalog records the enthusiasm for those opening titles and the subsequent move into standalone cartoons. that move makes sense as soon as you separate the character from the assignment. a jewel needs to be stolen. this animal only needs to encounter something he would prefer arranged differently.

    an unreasonable position on paint

the premise of The Pink Phink is a decorating disagreement. a little man wants to paint a house blue. the Panther prefers pink. unfortunately, both parties have access to paint.

The Pink Phink, from the official Pink Panther channel. © MGM.

that is plenty. color makes the dispute legible immediately. every patch of blue is a little provocation; every patch of pink is a reply. nobody needs to explain what the house represents, or provide a childhood incident that made the Panther this way. he has a preference and an alarming amount of free time.

the short won the cartoon Oscar at the 1965 ceremony. a workplace dispute over a color swatch had successfully become cinema.

the paint dispute has escalated. Official thumbnail: The Pink Phink, Official Pink Panther. © MGM; reproduced for animation commentary.

The Pink Blueprint pushes a related objection into the house plans themselves. the Panther has a preferred design and becomes the builder’s problem. the recurring pleasure is how little justification he needs. he can be graceful, stylish, and completely impossible to work with. excellent range.

The Pink Panther holds a ruler beside a curved wall in the official thumbnail for The Pink Blueprint.
the design review has also escalated. Official thumbnail: The Pink Blueprint, Official Pink Panther. © MGM; reproduced for animation commentary.

    you can keep the cat

the largely pantomime approach helps. DePatie’s interview makes clear that the character did sometimes speak, so “the Pink Panther never talks” needs an asterisk. but a character built around movement and visual interference can travel remarkably light. a look, a pose, a new obstacle: enough information to start.

a spin-off often arrives promising to explain more of its parent story. the Panther’s cartoons demonstrate the appeal of needing less. the live-action films can keep their detectives, thieves, and jewels. there is a whole separate kind of comedy available in watching an elegant creature make a petty decision and pursue it with unacceptable commitment.

he was supposed to introduce the stars. then someone left a paintbrush unattended.

there is something useful about reading a review of super mario bros. written before it became a foundational text. somebody had to sit down and explain the little guy. the mushroom kingdom did not arrive with a museum label.

the video game history foundation’s computer entertainer archive preserves the newsletter’s entire 1982–1990 run, with free access and a creative commons license. co-editors marylou badeaux and celeste dolan were covering games as things people might actually buy, rather than entries in a canon that had already been settled.

that distance matters. a contemporary review can restore the uncertainty that a retrospective smooths away: what needed explaining, what seemed impressive, what a reader was expected to know. even the photograph of mario on a television makes the game feel like an object in someone’s room again.

preservation gets more interesting when it keeps the conversation around a game, too. the cartridge tells us what was playable. the newsletter tells us what somebody thought was worth mailing.

Five things worth a tab: a boss fight with a fairness policy, Maria Bamford’s new documentary, a December music-business drama, tonight’s tag-title defense, and a phone that has finally folded.

the boss has a fairness policy

In today’s Saros development feature, Housemarque and Nixxes explain how they divided the work of building its set-piece bosses. Each encounter has three distinct phases, and the teams’ test after a defeat was whether the player understood what went wrong and wanted another attempt. A boss can be enormous without making the instructions microscopic. The linked feature contains boss spoilers; the useful design lesson travels without needing the full tour.
