i enjoy watching baseball. i also forget baseball exists until the playoffs every year. apparently my fandom has a flowering season.
there is a particular pleasure in turning up when the stakes are high and immediately developing opinions. do i have the longitudinal data? no. do i suddenly care very deeply about this man reaching second base? absolutely.
sports people sometimes make casual fandom sound like stolen valor. sorry i didn’t complete the summer internship before enjoying the game. i am here now, i have a snack, and i would like something dramatic to happen.
you’re allowed to like a thing seasonally. not every interest needs to become a second job. see also: my annual return to knowing what an inning is.
